WASHINGTON -- The season isnt quite half over, and already New Jersey Devils coach Pete DeBoer might be running out ways to praise about Jaromir Jagr. Jagr had a goal and two assists, Andy Greene scored 43 seconds into overtime and Marek Zidlicky had two goals as the Devils rallied past the Washington Capitals 5-4 Saturday night. "He amazes me every night I come to the rink," DeBoer said of the 41-year-old forward. "I dont have a lot more adjectives to describe him, but hes a pleasure to work with." It was Jagrs 13th goal of the season and career No. 694, moving him into a tie with Mark Messier for seventh all-time. Greene, who knocked the rebound of a shot by Jagr past Braden Holtby for the game-winner, also had two assists. "I honestly cant remember the last overtime goal I scored," Greene said. Dainius Zubrus had a goal and an assist for New Jersey, which trailed 3-1 after two periods. "I think everyones surprised we came back (but) I think the least surprised guys are in our room," DeBoer said. "I think they felt confident all night they could still make a game of it." Alex Ovechkin scored his 30th goal and Joel Ward had a goal and an assist for Washington. The Capitals Jason Chimera and Mikhail Grabovski also scored and Martin Erat had two assists. Martin Brodeur made 18 saves for the Devils, who lost in overtime to Anaheim on Friday night. "Today, I felt like we were playing very good hockey the first two periods, and I look at the scoreboard and we were down 3-1," Jagr said. "That was kind of tough to swallow, but we got some lucky bounces in the third period, and tied the game and went into overtime again. "I thought we responded very well when we were down two goals, and its a big win for us," he said. Holtby finished with 32 saves in the first meeting of the season between Metropolitan Division rivals. "They are a relentless team. They kept coming," Capitals coach Adam Oates said. "We made a couple of mistakes." Jagr, on a power play, and Ovechkin traded third-period goals three minutes apart. Zidlicky pulled the Devils within 4-3 when he beat Holtby from the slot at 9:21. New Jersey tied it when Travis Zajac intercepted Holtbys clearing attempt and fed in front to Zubrus, who poked it home at 11:47. "We just gave them a little momentum to get back into it and they capitalized on their chances right to the end," Ward said. Both teams were playing the second of back-to-back games and there was little action early on. Brodeur made several good stops during a Washington power play midway through the period. New Jersey got the man advantage when Tom Wilson went off for high-sticking at 10:52. Less than a minute later Greene fed Zidlicky in the left circle and Zidlicky one-timed a drive past Holtby on the short side to make it 1-0. It was New Jerseys first shot on goal. The Devils tested Holtby several times early in the second period, but he kept the deficit at one. Chimera finally tied it at the 10:07 mark when he came around the back of the net and tried to stuff the puck home. Brodeur made the initial save, but Chimera poked the loose puck past him. Grabovski gave Washington the lead at 14:38 of the period with his 10th of the year, off a feed from Eric Fehr in the left circle. "We kind of shot ourselves in the foot there in the second period," Greene said. "There were a couple of breakdowns and they capitalized." The Capitals went ahead 3-1 with 45 seconds left in the period. They skated in three on two and Mike Green fired from the right side. Brodeur made the save, but it went right to Ward who put it past him for his 11th of the season. "We played a good 40 minutes," Green said, "but we needed 60 tonight." NOTES: Ovechkin has scored 30 or more goals in nine straight seasons. Hes scored a goal in four straight games. ... Jagr extended his points streak to seven games with a first-period assist. ... The Devils were without C Andrei Loktionov (illness) and RW Damien Brunner (knee), who was injured Friday against Anaheim. The Devils said Brunner will be out a minimum of four weeks. ... Brodeur, the winningest goalie in NHL history, gutted out a 3-2 Devils victory over Lundqvist and the Rangers on Tuesday night. New Jersey took three one-goal leads and made the last one stick after Dainius Zubrus scored with 2:55 remaining. "We tied it up in the third, and we got unfortunate on all their three goals," Vigneault said. "Their goaltender made some big saves at key times." One shot that eluded Lundqvist was singled out by Vigneault -- Ryan Carters second of the game and season that gave the Devils a 2-1 lead with 46.1 seconds left in the second period. Carter beat speedy Rangers forward Carl Hagelin to Adam Larssons dump-in and cut in on Lundqvist. He sent a quick shot through the crease and inside the left post. When asked about Hagelins role in that goal, Vigneault seemingly shifted the focus onto Lundqvist. "Im not quite sure what happened there," Vigneault said. "It was an easy first man on the puck, but mind you its a routine save." Zubrus made it 3-2 when he put in a loose puck after his shot was blocked by defenceman Dan Girardi. That gave Brodeur a third straight win. "Any win at the Garden is a great win," New Devils owner Josh Harris said. Girardi had gotten the Rangers even at 2 when he scored his first of the season with 7:42 left. Girardi banked in a shot from the blue line off the skate of Devils defenceman Adam Larsson, who turned 21 Tuesday. "Just an overall gutsy effort, and our goalie was fantastic," Devils coach Pete DeBoer said. "I think weve gotten nice starting goaltending for the last three weeks." "We didnt give anything to them, and we fought all night," said Jagr, who earlier Tuesday told his teammates they would win 3-2. "We had a lot of chances to break it open, especially me. I should have scored on that breakaway, and it would have been 3-1, and game over." But that save wasnt enough for the Rangers. "We came out and did the things that we needed to do," Lundqvist said. "We came back into the game and gave us a chance to win. I had a good feeling, especially when we tied it up, but its over and its a tough one. "A lot of good things, but we needed to find a way to win there, and we didnt." Carter netted his first goal with another aggressive charge. He shoved a shot in close that appeared to hit the skate of backchecking forward J.T. Miller and Lundqvists stick before sneaking inside the left post at 6:37. "Thats the way it works sometimes," Carter said. "You get a few in on shots you might not think are going in. I had some clean shots, some dream shots, and he stopped them." The Rangers bounced right back off a rush by Mats Zuccarello, who curled behind the Devils net and backhanded a pass to Staal for a one-timer from above the left circle. The defencemans second of the season snapped Brodeurs shutout streak at 191 minutes, 21 seconds. Brodeur turned aside a hard drive by Derek Stepan less than 5 minutes in, and then stonewalled Zuccarello twice in the crease. Chris Kreider put the puck into the net, but after the whistle was blown. Brodeur thrust his glove into the face of the 5-foot-7 Zuccarello during a stoppage, and even made a save with his mask, mimicking Lundqvists style. "I wanted to match him up," Brodeur said. "I just saw it last second, and I just reacted, and it went off my head. It was a Lundqvist save, I guess."
