the Blue Jackets in the Antworten

VANCOUVER -- Sidney Crosby tied the score late in regulation and added the only goal of the shootout Tuesday as the Pittsburgh Penguins fought back to beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-4. Crosby and Kris Letang scored 16 seconds apart late regulation to tie the score for Pittsburgh after Vancouver grabbed a 4-2 lead. Evgeni Malkin and Brian Gibbons also scored for Pittsburgh (32-12-1). Jussi Jokinen added two assists, while Crosby had one of his own. Marc-Andre Fleury made 22 saves for the win. Chris Higgins, Zack Kassian and Christopher Tanev each had a goal and an assist, while Jason Garrison also scored for Vancouver (23-14-8). Eddie Lack made 31 saves as the Canucks lost their fifth game in a row. Tied 2-2 in the third, Vancouver looked to be on its way to a victory when Higgins beat Fleury through the five-hole on a breakaway with 6:53 left in regulation and Kassian batted a puck down off the rush and swatted it past the Penguins goalie at 6:36. But Letang scored with 1:11 left in regulation with Fleury on the bench and Crosby tied it 16 seconds later. Lack was called upon to make a couple big saves in overtime, including one off of James Neal on a 2-on-1. Lack made his second consecutive start for Vancouver in place of the injured Roberto Luongo, who suffered a suspected ankle injury against the Los Angeles Kings over the weekend. Luongo, who was named to Canadas Olympic team along with Canucks defenceman Dan Hamhuis earlier in the day, had just returned to the lineup after dealing with a groin issue. Tuesdays game marked the first for Crosby at Rogers Arena since his overtime goal in the gold-medal game at the 2010 Games. Crosby and Penguins linemate Chris Kunitz were also named to Canadas Olympic team earlier in the day. Down 2-1 after two periods, Vancouver tied the score at 7:39 of third when Tanevs shot from the point beat Fleury through traffic for his fifth of the season. Higgins then added his twelfth of the season before Kassian rounded out the scoring with his eighth as the Canucks picked up their first victory of 2014. Between the two goals Lack made a big blocker stop on Neal. With Pittsburgh leading 1-0 after the first period, Fleury made a breakaway save on Canucks forward Jannik Hansen early in the second. The Penguins broke back the other way with Malkin beating Lack on a shot through traffic from the slot for his 12th of the season at 5:25. Fleury had a bit of luck a bit later in the period as Canucks defenceman Yannick Weber rang a shot off the post, before Penguins counterpart Letang found iron behind Lack. Letang had two more great chances to extend the lead, but Lack made a couple of huge saves before Garrison cut the Penguins advantage in half at 15:35. After Crosby blindly threw the puck in front of his own net right to Garrison, the Vancouver defenceman ripped a shot by Fleury for his fifth of the season and first in 14 games. Gibbons opened the scoring at 13:15 of the first period after Hamhuis failed to control the puck at the Pittsburgh blue-line. Playing on a line with Crosby and Kunitz, the undrafted 25-year-old free agent out of Boston College raced in alone and beat Lack through the five-hole for his second goal of the season in just his 11th NHL game. Pittsburghs No. 1-ranked power play went to work later in the period, but Vancouvers top-ranked penalty kill weathered the storm. Things nearly got worse for Hamhuis, who will be making his Olympic debut next month after playing seven times for Canada at other international tournaments, in the final minute when Malkin jumped on his turnover and nearly beat Lack from in close. Both of Kanes tallies came on the power play, including an empty-netter with less than a minute left to seal the win. Andrew Ladd scored the eventual game-winner for the Jets in the second period, just 31 seconds after Kanes first goal of the game. Bryan Little gave Winnipeg a 1-0 lead just nine seconds into the game with his seventh goal of the season, but a Jordan Leopold power-play goal for Columbus tied the game minutes later. Ryan Johansen added a goal for the Blue Jackets in the third period and Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves in the loss. The Jets went right to work after winning the opening faceoff. A nifty one- touch pass along the boards from Blake Wheeler set up a give-and-go between Ladd and Little, who backhanded the puck past Bobrovsky. On a power play a few minutes later, Leopold scored his first goal since being acquired from St. Louis on Nov. 15 on a wrist shot from the top of the left circle. Kane was effective early on Winnipegs penalty kill. He forced Bobrovsky to make a glove save on the first Jackets power play, and his touch pass to Wheeler late in the period drew a high-sticking double minor on Johansen. The Jets were unable to take advantage, though, and the game remained 1-1 after the power play ended early in the second period. A pair of Winnipeg penalties gave the Blue Jackets a 5-on-3 opportunity where they generated plenty of pressure on Hutchinson, but a Scott Hartnell goaltender interference penalty ended the threat. Minutes later, Dustin Byfuglien found Kane parked in front of the net between Blue Jackets and delivered a pass that Kane redirected past Bobrovsky to put the Jets up 2-1. Moments after the go-ahead goal, Ladd wristed one past Bobbrovsky with traffic in front of the net for the quick 3-1 lead.dddddddddddd Meanwhile, Columbus could not take advantage of its opportunities. A pass sent Cam Atkinson all alone on Hutchinson, but the goaltender held his ground and did not allow Atkinson to even get a shot off. Not long after, Zach Bogosian fell over behind the net, turning the puck over to Boone Jenner right in front of Hutchinson. The goalie was able to move side-to-side and stop the Jenner shot. Wheeler had a chance to put the game away in the third when he split the Columbus defense to move in on goal, but Bobrovsky made the stop to keep the Blue Jackets in the game. Seizing the momentum after Bobrovskys big save, Johansen found the loose puck behind the net minutes later. On the backhand, he wrapped around to the slot and shot the puck past Hutchinson for his eighth of the season to cut the deficit to 3-2. Perhaps the best Columbus chance to tie the game came with eight minutes left. Artem Anisimov set up Brian Gibbons for a shot on a 2-on-1 breakaway, but it missed the net. The carom off the glass went right to Anisimov, but he was unable to stuff the puck into the net with Hutchinson out of position. Columbus attempted to pull Bobrovsky for the extra skater, but a turnover as he was leaving the ice proved costly. Bobrovsky had to skate back toward his goal to stop a shot at the vacated net, but the extra skater had already come on the ice, resulting in a penalty. With the net empty and Winnipeg on the power play, Kane scored his second of the game and fourth of the season to seal the win. Game Notes Five Jets had two-point games ... Columbus defenseman James Wisniewski played in his 500th NHL game and scored his 250th point with an assist on Johansens goal ... Winnipeg has allowed a power-play goal in six consecutive games.
