LOS ANGELES -- The postgame whoops and hollers from the visitors locker room were audible through two closed doors after the Philadelphia 76ers capitalized on their final chance in 2013 to end their 13-game road losing streak. Thaddeus Young scored seven of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, Evan Turner added 22 points, and the 76ers hung on for their first road win since Nov. 1, beating the depleted Los Angeles Lakers 111-104 on Sunday night. Spencer Hawes had 19 points and eight rebounds, while Young and Michael Carter-Williams contributed big points down the stretch as the last-place Sixers held on for just their second win in 11 games overall. "You keep hammering the rock, and one day its going to split," Philadelphia coach Brett Brown said. "Tonight it split." The Lakers are a shadow of their traditional selves these days, with Pau Gasol joining Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash on the sidelines for this meeting. That didnt dampen the Sixers enthusiasm after doubling their road win total in the second game of a back-to-back set. Philadelphia had lost 19 of 23 since its unlikely 4-2 start to the season. "Wins from time to time help validate the work that everybody is putting in," Brown said. "If theres such a thing as deserving something, I think they deserved it." Philadelphia went up 104-99 with 1:44 to play on a layup by Young, who added a three-point play on the next possession. Jordan Farmars 3-pointer with 55 seconds left cut the Sixers lead to three points, but Shawne Williams missed an open 3-pointer that could have tied it, and Carter-Williams hit two late free throws to secure Philadelphias second straight road win over the Lakers. "Its definitely a great way to close out the year," Young said. "Weve been playing hard all season long. Our record doesnt say were going out there and doing the job, but were working to get better every time." Nick Young scored 26 points on 6-for-21 shooting in the Lakers fifth consecutive loss. Los Angeles also has lost five of six at Staples Center, winning just once at home since Nov. 24. Gasol missed his second straight game with a respiratory infection for the Lakers, who already were without Bryant, Nash and Steve Blake. Chris Kaman suited up despite limited movement on his injured ankle, and Jordan Hill contributed 18 points and 13 rebounds while starting at centre. Los Angeles then lost swingman Xavier Henry to a strained right knee in the first quarter. Henry recently filled in at point guard while Bryant and the Lakers top three point guards were injured. "We had guys battling, but we just dont have enough right now," Lakers coach Mike DAntoni said. "Its tough to gauge where we are because we dont quite know what were going to get when we get out there. ... Weve got to turn the corner somehow. Weve got to get a couple of breaks and get some momentum going." Two days after the Lakers lost to Utah, the Western Conferences last-place team, Los Angeles lost to another one of the NBAs worst. Injuries are an undeniable factor, but the Lakers 22 turnovers and 37-per cent shooting might have been topics of general manager Mitch Kupchaks meeting with DAntoni after the game. Jodie Meeks scored 15 points as the Lakers used their 16th starting lineup in 31 games, including seven straight games with a new starting five since Bryant broke a bone near his knee. "Weve just got to go out there and find ourselves again," Nick Young said. "We have to bring our energy and just have fun. Weve been worrying too much out there. Its tough trying to get wins, but we have to fight. We cant fight with ourselves and be down on ourselves. This is the time we have to stay together the most. We need to be a team right now more than anything." Henry will have an MRI exam Monday. In his absence, recent D-League call-up Kendall Marshall stepped in as Farmars backup at point guard, contributing eight points and three assists. NOTES: After the Sixers missed nine of their first 10 shots in the first quarter, the Lakers promptly missed nine of their next 10. ... Nick Young spent last season with Philadelphia, averaging 10.6 points while largely coming off the bench. He left as a free agent to join his favourite boyhood team in his native Los Angeles. ... So, I certainly plan on being back, if the Broncos will have me. But at this point, Im kind of thinking about Oakland.A win over the Raiders (3-12) on Sunday would earn the Broncos (11-4) a first-round bye.Manning said he knows talk this time of year turns to the coaching carousel and I get to fall into that category because maybe Im closer to the same age as some of the coaches. But yeah, I have no plans along those lines. Im enjoying playing and looking forward to Sundays game and the game to follow that.Manning, 38, is trying to supplant his boss, Broncos GM John Elway, as the oldest QB to win a Super Bowl. But first, hes trying to bounce back from a poor performance in Denvers 37-28 loss Monday night at Cincinnati, where he threw four interceptions for the sixth time in his career.Although the Broncos have down-shifted their high-octane offence over the past several weeks to work on a better ground game, Manning has thrown just five TD passes to go with six interceptions in the past month.Thats sparked a debate over whether time is finally catching up to Manning despite his posting a 39-12 record following spinal fusion surgery in 2011.With every interception, the debate grows in both traditional and social media over his age, health and even his credentials.Yeah, thats probably a little deeper than I can handle, Manning said. ... But the ones the other night were a combination of bad throws and bad decisions. ... I take a lot of pride in trying to be an accurate quarterback and trying to be disciplined in my decision making. So, I didnt play up to my standards the other night and certainly on those four particular plays, Ive got to do a better jobb.ddddddddddddIm not sure how old you are has (anything) to do with it. You can be 22 and throw a ball behind a guy, youre probably going to get intercepted.Manning is in some ways a victim of his own greatness. In his first 43 regular-season games in a Broncos uniform, Manning averaged 27 completions per game for 318 yards. Over his past four, hes averaged 18 completions for 224 yards. His TD rate has fallen from 2.68 per game to 1.25, and his interception rate has more than doubled from .69 to 1.5.Coach John Fox issued an impassioned defence of his quarterback this week, saying, if you look at the meaningful statistics as it relates to quarterback, I think hes probably in the top five in the National Football League, which were pleased with.Manning leads the NFL with 39 TD passes and his 102.9 passer rating and 4,454 yards passing both rank fourth. And hes done it despite Julius Thomas six-week TD slump, Wes Welkers drastic drop in production and a jumbled O-line thats not given him enough time or space to step into his throws.Although his teammates fully expected it, Mannings pronouncement Wednesday was met with glee.Eighteens back, were back! running back C.J. Anderson said. Naw, I just think hes got a lot to prove. I dont know if Peyton pays attention to that. But I just know if someones talking bad about me almost every week, I would want to come back and show you guys wrong.Cornerback Chris Harris Jr. said he anticipates Manning playing beyond 2015.I expect him to play out his whole deal, Harris said. Even if we win the Super Bowl, I see Peyton coming back still because we would pretty much have everybody back.Manning is due $19 million salaries in both 2015 and 16.Notes: RB Ronnie Hillman was a full participant in practice for the first time since he sprained his left foot Nov. 9. ... S T.J. Ward (neck) was limited. ... Anderson apologized for his terse postgame interview in which he answered every question with a version of: We played terrible. Weve got to get better. He said he should have cooled off before speaking with reporters.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
